From Minerals to Continents: Insights into the Thermal History of Mountains Speaker: Dr. Gourab Bhattacharya Current designation: Assistant Professor, Department of Earth Sciences, Tennessee Tech University, United States of America Minerals like zircon and apatite record the thermal history of rocks over millions of years. The technique of determining the time-temperature history of rocks using such minerals is known as mineral thermochronometry. Studies involving mineral thermochronometry have grown exponentially over the past decade and help to understand the geodynamic, tectonic, geomorphic, and climatic factors that trigger regional-scale rock exhumation in a variety of tectonic settings. This presentation highlights the applications of this method in mountain belts using a case study from the India-Asia plate collision zone in northwest India.
