Title: Alkanes for UV screening? Ask Antarctic algae and mosses Speaker: UGC-Assistant Professor, Department of Geology, Presidency University, Kolkata Abstract: The leaf colour (green, red, and grey) of mosses and lake benthic mats in Antarctica varies from early spring to late summer. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays and changes in the abundance of pectin and phenols are considered the cause of the colour change, but the mechanism has not been established. The research links the relative abundance of short-chain n-alkanes to UV-B exposure and proposes that Antarctic mosses and benthic mats synthesise short-chain n-alkanes for protection against UV-B.
