How did the early Universe become enriched with the chemical elements we see today? Recent observations from the James Webb Space Telescope have revealed unexpected chemical abundances in distant galaxies, challenging our understanding of how stars and galaxies evolve. In this video, discover how an international team of scientists gathered at ISSI in Bern to investigate these mysteries. Through the unique ISSI Workshop format, fostering interdisciplinary discussions and collaborative research, the team aims to explain these surprising observations and advance our understanding of the chemical evolution of the Universe. About the workshop “Connecting Chemical Abundances to their Generative Stellar Populations in Distant Galaxies” took place at ISSI from 29 June to 3 July 2026 and was co-led by ISSI Fellow Dr. Brian Welch. JWST now measures the abundances of several elements in galaxies out to a redshift of about 12, and the results are surprising. Some of the most distant galaxies show strong excesses of nitrogen, while many galaxies at Cosmic Noon show deficiencies in elements such as sulfur and argon. Many explanations have been proposed, from massive stars, Wolf-Rayet stars, and core-collapse supernovae to AGB stars, very massive stars, and supermassive stars. Dense star clusters may also play a role, possibly linking these distant galaxies to the abundance variations seen in local globular clusters. The workshop brought together experts on stellar populations and yields, star clusters, local galaxies, and high-redshift galaxies. The goal is to build a community consensus on what drives chemical evolution across cosmic time, to identify where new data or modelling could tell the competing scenarios apart, and to publish the findings in a short series of peer-reviewed papers. Why ISSI Workshops? No single research community can solve a puzzle like this alone. ISSI Workshops give experts from different fields time and space to talk, challenge each other’s ideas, and work towards shared results, which are then published for the whole scientific community. 🟦 Workshop page: https://workshops.issibern.ch/distant-galaxies/🟦 Propose a workshop at ISSI: https://www.issibern.ch/scientific-opportunities/workshops/🟦 ISSI website: https://www.issibern.ch Credits Video: Mathieu Marié with VoiceOver by Dr. Brian WelchWorkshop: Dr. Brian Welch and the workshop participantsInstitute: International Space Science Institute (ISSI), Bern, Switzerland #ISSI #ISSIworkshops #JWST #JamesWebbSpaceTelescope #Astrophysics #ChemicalEvolution #GalaxyEvolution #SpaceScience #Bern
