Why should you learn Machine Learning? A tool for geochemists! Speaker: Urmi Ghosh, Ph.D. (Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur) Current designation: Digital Mineralogist, James Hutton Institute, Aberdeen, UK Machine Learning and Artificial intelligence are about 60 years old. But the proper utilization of the technique is only a recent process, mainly due to the development of large datasets and advancements in computation technology. In geoscience, the Machine learning application started much later. With the improvement in the instrumentation techniques and a large amount of data generation, it has become essential to look at these data together to form a bigger picture: to identify patterns, classify the samples, or predict an output value. It has become an essential tool for geochemists, and now is when we, as Earth scientists, should use this powerful tool.
